Things I Want to Treat Myself to in 2017

Posted in Lifestyle
on January 4, 2017

I am a firm believer in treating yourself regularly, but I don’t mean with an occasional glass of wine or your favorite chocolate. Granted, it’s perfectly fine if you want to treat yourself to those things because wine and chocolate make everything better—amiright?

Instead, I want to share important things I want to treat myself to now that a new year is upon us.

1| Frequent Self Care

There are some months where I practice self care regularly, and there are other periods of time where I go months without proper self care. For 2017, I want to make self care a main priority because it’s important to keeping yourself sane, happy and healthy. Spend a Saturday at home reading, drawing, or with your closest friends or family. Spend time on activities and hobbies you enjoy. And don’t feel guilty about doing so. You deserve it.

2| A Spontaneous Adventure

In 2016, I was able to take rather spontaneous trips: one to Albany and one to Texas. Both were incredible and definitely were highlights because I got to visit two college friends that I don’t see as often now that we have all graduated and live in different places. in 2017, I want to treat myself to an unexpected adventure or trip. I don’t know what it will be, but I can’t wait to find out!

3| Invest in Quality Items

Since I have been practicing minimalism more throughout 2016, I want to continue those habits and focus on this lifestyle more in 2017 as well. One of the main lessons I’ve taken away from minimalism is that I have changed my spending habits and what items I bring into my home whether it’s an article of clothing, or something for my home. In 2017, I want to treat myself to high-quality items for myself, but only if I truly need them. Quality over quantity is very important to me with this lifestyle in mind.

4| Breaks & Time Off

I work hard, and I know that I deserve time off. I also know that I deserve to spend my days off not thinking about work. For 2017, I want make sure that my days off are truly spent taking time away from work and focusing on other things. I don’t want to be the person who checks their email or takes business calls on their vacation or on a Sunday. I’m treating myself to a life outside of work that I truly love because work should never control your life in that way.

5| Time for Myself

Everyone deserves time for themselves. Time to read, relax, workout, have a coffee date with yourself or treat yourself to your favorite sushi. I want 2017 to be a year where I consistently treat myself to time where I can go alone to my favorite sushi restaurant and not feel awkward, or spend a weekend alone and find complete comfort knowing that I don’t need to make plans to have a fun weekend. I want to focus on independence and time for myself.

What are you treating yourself to in 2017? Make sure to share in the comments below!

  • These all sound like really great goals! Good on you for wanting to take true breaks and don’t spend your day off still checking work! Can’t wait to read all about your spontaneous adventure, wherever it may lead you! Have fun x

    • Thank you! There was a time where I felt like I was constantly on the clock, and I earned that’s not how I want to live my life!I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated on any new adventure that come in 2017 as well!

  • Meghan

I’m with you on the quality items and minimalism. It’s so easy to get caught up in attaining “more” that it becomes stressful and overwhelming. Most of us have enough already, and it’s wiser to invest in fewer high-quality things. I’m really going to try to do that this year, too. And maybe trade in a few cups of coffee for water instead (although that will be more challenging.) 🙂

    • I hear ya on trading coffee for water. Granted, I have gotten so much better on having only one (huge) cup a day instead of having three or more. And I definitely focus on having more water. It has done wonders for my skin!

  • Nicole Leith

Time for myself in on my 2017 list as well! As much as I love a clean house and checking things off of my to do list, it’s just as important to take time for myself. I really stress myself out when I don’t get that time. I’ve committed to 15 minutes of cleaning each day to maintain the house and so far I’ve had time to write and do yoga each day!

    • That’s wonderful! It’s amazing how much you can accomplish when you do a little bit each day, or clean up as you go throughout the day!

  • Yes to all of these!!! Treating yourself rather it is big or small is always nice. I plan on getting as many massages this year as I can. I have a monthly membership and have so many massages that I have yet to use. Time off is always needed. I hope you are able to treat yourself as much as possible this year!

    • Thank you so much, Mistle! I think having a balanced schedule of work and play is very important when you work a lot. Balance is the key for me!

  • These all sound like perfect things to focus on! Self care in general is so important!

    • I couldn’t agree with you more! Self care is definitely my main focus for 2017.

  • Choosing to purchase quality items is a great way to treat yourself in 2017! I want to treat myself to my first professional camera, but the discipline of saving first has to happen. 😉 I also like treating myself to a new beauty product every now and then.

    • Good luck with your savings plan! Can’t wait to see all the lovely photos you’ll take on your blog with your camera! That should definitely motivate you to savesavesave! 🙂

  • All of these are great to implement! I really like #3 with buying quality over quantity. I went to target the other day and saw some really cute “trendy” pieces, but after trying them on realized I’d only wear them once or twice, so I put them back. Small steps! lol

    • Yes! It’s all about small steps, Cara! I think becoming a more conscious shopper is very important if you want to take on a minimalist lifestyle. It’s always wonderful because you are saving more money!

  • Great list! Travel, for me, is a new priority. I usually go SOMEWHERE at least once a year, but I want to take smaller “trips.” Weekend trips. Roadtrips. Visit new towns/cities/states. I live in NY and close to NYC so I end up getting stuck in my bubble and never venturing out. I was just in Miami, am going to Charleston in March and am planning some other things as well! Happy New Year!

    • Exactly, Allison! I am with you on the weekend trips and road trips! I’m going to Boston, but Charleston is top on my list as well! You’ll have to let me know how your trip is and offer any must-see places, etc.

  • I love this post! It’s so important to treat ourselves, and I love that you are taking care of yourself this year.

    • Thanks so much, Rebecca! I think it’s time that I truly focus on consistent self care, time off, and time for me!

  • Self care and time to yourself is so essential! In 2017, I want to treat myself to self care as well. I forget to take care of myself all too much.

    • I think that’s very normal for people like us who are in marketing and social media! We;re constantly plugged in even after hours. I’m sure we’re both on social media checking on things, but I’ve learned to stop working after 5 as much as possible! Some days are better than others, but I’m working on it!

  • Ashley Stephenson

I agree about the time off! I hardly ever take a day off of work just to relax, if I take off I am doing a million things. I am definitely going to take some days off from work just to give time for myself!

    • Time off from work is essential for getting a little rest and having time to relax your time and take a break! That way, you’re refreshed and ready for working hard at your job!

  • I think I need to treat myself to a few small getaways with my husband, more spa days, and more fresh flowers in the house. Just the things that make me happy!!

    • I’m with you on spa days and fresh flowers! I’m hoping that I can travel a little more this year as well. Hopefully the next few years will be filled with travel!

  • I really want to start investing in quality items too. I always buy random things and then don’t have money for things that add value.

    • Exactly! I agree that quality over quantity is a huge priority for me!

  • Love it Kiara! I am all about self care and breaks! I get a massage every month and try to find a fancy spa each month!

    Rachel | The Confused Millennial

    • That’s amazing you’re able to do that every month. I try to go a few times each year (once a season is typical for me) and it has been so helpful. I might consider amping up my time at the spa now that you’ve mentioned it, haha!

  • Self care and adventure are definite musts!

  • Katie Kinsley

I would love to treat myself to an indulgent massage every month, but I never splurge because I don’t think its as important as other things. Maybe a couple times of year would be okay!

    • I always recommend different websites where you can get bulk deals. Essentially you can have rewards for book two massages, get 1 (or 2) free for a discounted rate!

      • Katie Kinsley

        Do you use groupon?

  • Love all of these! I was talking with a girlfriend recently and we decided that frequent self care needs to be more of a priority in our lives!

    Clothes & Quotes

    • So glad there are other women out there who are putting themselves first and focusing on self care! LOVE IT!

  • Sarah Jean

quality over quantity has always been my motto. I prefer fewer but nicer things!

    • I think it’s the best way to live. Sometimes, I have scored a few deals on some staple items like basic T-Shirts. But for a little black dress, I will always invest!

  • Lisa McDermott

I made that my New Years resolution to take more time for myself this year. And set time aside for a pamper day at least once a month.

    • Yes! That’s the best thing you can do is to always make sure you making the time for yourself and to treat yourself frequently!

  • I’m with ya on so many of these, Kiara! I’m DONE putting myself last behind work and everything else, and I’m DONE just spending the least amount possible for the most things…I’d rather get the most BANG for my buck by investing in things I truly lovelovelove!

    Coming Up Roses

    • Yes! I’m so glad there are other fashion lovers who feel the same way. Sure, are the deals and things at Forever 21 cute? Yes. Does it break my heart when those items are worn down completely after a year? YASSS. Quality over quantity is always the way to go!

  • Cassie

Yes! 100% treat yourself! You really need to take care of yourself mentally, and sometimes even just taking a mental break and sprawling out on the couch to watch Netflix is the best thing for you! Good for you!

    • Thank you so much, Cassie! Sometimes, I would feel so guilty about watching a second episode of New Girl when I knew there were other things I should be doing. But with working full time, blogging and other things–sometimes you need a little more time for yourself (and Netflix!)

  • JamieSplendry

Love this idea! I think I’ll follow your lead this year!

  • I’m really bad at self care, I have to work on it too. I know that it is important for both your health and mental health, but it’s so difficult when you’re putting yourself on the second plan every single time.

    • I completely understand where you’re coming from. My best tip is to schedule a power hour where you set a timer for 60 minutes and take that scheduled time for yourself. Whether it’s a face mask and wine, reading, walking outside, etc. you have scheduled time for you!

  • These are fabulous, girl. So happy for you and can’t wait to see how they unfold for you in the new year!

P.S. I love your blog aesthetic!

    xo Kathryn

    • Thank you so much, Kathryn! I appreciate that so much! Thank you for commenting on my blog aesthetic–I know everyone has their own opinions about things like that, so I’m glad to know other people enjoy it! 🙂

  • This is perfect! I like the idea of a spontaneous adventure – I’m always planning ahead!

  • Rachel Golden

I love this list! Self care was something I completely blew off in college. I was constantly doing school work or going out or organizing something for the various clubs I was in. I got a little bit of rest once I graduated, but then I worked constantly on my blog and there were months at a time when I just didn’t take care of myself. (cue my many colds) I definitely want 2017 to be more relaxing and taking care of myself. I’ve started implementing some of my tactics, so I guess we’ll see!

  • Yes. Yes. Yes. I especially love that you mentioned investing in quality items because that is a big one for me too.

  • Love these tips! Working a full-time job and running my blog basically full-time, it can be really hard to remember to take time for self-care and just to relax and have fun!

  • Those are all such amazing things that we all need to treat ourselves too ♥ AND not feel bad about treating ourselves to them! I love this list! Thank you for sharing.

  • Ashley @ simmerandsprout

All great goals! I especially love the treating yourself to higher quality items. I’ve had to make a serious adjustment there too. Less stuff, better quality.

  • These are great. Self-care should be higher on my personal list and I hope this year I can find a way to stay accountable!
