8 Things to Let go of in 2018

I hope you are all having a wonderful 2018 so far!

I have been reading posts in the blogging community about their goals for the new year, or their word for 2018, and similar posts. We are constantly adding things that we want to do or accomplish in a new year, but we don’t often think about things we should let go of. It had me thinking about a new perspective I want to challenge you all with for 2018, so I decide to share what you should let go of in 2018. If you’re looking for a little inspiration, and a lot of bliss—keep reading.

1| Perfectionism

It’s okay to go to work without a full face of makeup and perfectly done hair. It’s okay if your Instagram isn’t perfectly cohesive. It’s okay if you’re not going to cute cafes, and traveling to new places every single month. It’s okay if your party doesn’t have Pinterest-worthy foods and DIY decorations. Life isn’t perfect, so we shouldn’t keep bringing ourselves down in 2018 when things aren’t perfect. You won’t have it together all the time, and there’s nothing wrong with it. Embrace the imperfect moments of life.

2| Negative self-talk

You are beautiful. You are loved. You are needed. You are enough. If there’s one thing you need to let go of in 2018 it’s negative self talk. Self love should be a priority in your life because you deserve to have a positive, loving relationship with yourself. After all, you’re going to be with yourself for your entire life, so you may as well like yourself. Drop the negativity and be kind to yourself. Remember that you’re doing the best that you can, and you’re always going to be a work in progress.

3| Toxic relationships

Let go of the people who don’t lift you up or bring any positivity to your life. Whether it’s a family member, long-time friend, or a coworker you have been spending time with. If they are constantly bringing you down, or they aren’t there for you when you need them there, they probably aren’t a friend worth keeping in the new year. Remember that not every person who comes in your life is meant to stay around forever, and it’s okay to let go of those relationships.

4| Items you don’t love or need

I had to get honest with myself on this one because I’ve noticed a few things I’ve been holding on to that I truly don’t need or even enjoy having around the house. Minimalism has definitely played a large role in my life, and I’m reminded that removing things I don’t love will only make space for more things that I do love. Take time to sort out your closet by asking yourself these 10 questions while decluttering. If you’re already past your closet, try a decluttering challenge, or look into other areas of minimalism that doesn’t involve decluttering.

5| The past 

2018 is a new beginning for all of us, and we should treat it as such. Remember to let go of the negative moments of the past year, so that it won’t hold you back in the new year. This can apply to any period of your life for that matter. When we hold on to feelings of the past, it affects our present self and potentially our future self. So, let the past stay in the past, and you’ll feel content living in the present moment.

6| Busy schedules

We need to stop glorifying busyness. We need to let go of packed schedules and saying yes to plans we don’t even want to make. It’s time we take care of ourselves, and have more time to live slowly and intentionally. Focus on self-care with a mental cleanse challenge. It’s important to have a balance between work and time for yourself. Oftentimes, we get caught up in work and constantly being on the go that it takes a horrible toll on our health altogether.

7| Procrastination

Sitting on Pinterest dreaming about the life you wish to have can only get you so far. You need to get up and do the things you want to accomplish. Creating a vision board works wonders on achieving your goals, and it’s a great place to start if you’re looking for a little motivation in the new year, too. Find your passion in life, and work at it every single day. Stay consistent with your goals and be productive with your day.

8| Comparison

Hey there, beautiful soul. Here’s a gentle reminder that you don’t need to compare yourself and your journey to someone’s else experiences. That’s how you get in a rut, and that’s no bueno. Instead of comparing yourself to other, remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can right now, and there’s always room for improvement. But don’t let comparison steal your joy from the things you love most.

Focusing on Balance in the New Year

Millennials work pretty hard if you ask me.

Most of my friends are working two jobs, or working full-time and going to grad school, or working full-time and pursuing a side business. I love to see all these amazing people chase their dreams and go after their goals. It’s incredible.

But also, I worry about this generation because we have normalized a busy scheduled. We have forgotten what it’s like to practice self care, take time to pursue slow living and live in the moment. We lose this sense of balance in our lives, and it’s time we make balance a priority in 2018. Instead of only focusing on your 9-5 job, make time to focus on everything that’s important to you.

Stop working 10-hour days, and make time for rest.

Stop isolating yourself, and make plans with people you love.

Stop ignoring your goals, and make them happen.

And I’m sure you’re wondering how you can make this happen.

Minimalism is how I achieve the ultimate balance in life. It’s how you’ll be able to work an eight-hour day, have time for self care, friends and family, vacation, and everything else that’s important to you.

How?

With minimalism, you’re removing all the non-essential things in your life to make room for all the essential things in your life including the goals you have for yourself. Minimalism helps you achieve your goals, so it’s a win-win situation for you and your life.

After decluttering my home, I spend less time cleaning every day, so I have time to have a girl’s night with my friends, catch up with my family on FaceTime, blog, and take time for myself. After implementing positive habits in my life like meal prepping on Sundays, I don’t waste hours every day cooking and making meals each day, which leaves time for appointments, workouts, sleep, and wedding planning.

Does it take extra effort to plan shopping lists in advance and meal prep meals in one day? YES! But, the amount of time, energy, and money I save in the long run is more than worth it.

After planning productive weekdays, I can spend an entire Saturday in my bed without any guilt. There’s always room for recharging my mind and body. Giving yourself time to recharge is so important, especially since we have glorified the idea of busyness.

Instead of stressing yourself out with to-do lists longer than a short novel, start with minimalism. Remove what you don’t need to make room for the things you need. 

The benefits you’ll see after taking on a more minimalist lifestyle are life changing! Instead of always feeling the need to hustle, work another job, do another project we simply can’t take on—remind yourself that you deserve a break. Stay balanced in life. Remember to take care of yourself. Get check-ups regularly. Drink water. Get enough sleep each night. Do things you love. Minimalism allows you to stay balanced and grounded.

So, how will you be more balanced in 2018? Maybe you work an extra five hours a week, and you haven’t made yourself a meal in a week. So not only are you overworked, but you’re also not taking care of yourself. It’s time to stop the bad habits that busyness brings, and get minimalism, and intentional living in your life. Trust me when I say that you WON’T regret it.

8 Things to Simplify in 2018

With a new year comes a clean slate, and a chance to begin with a fresh beginning. Needless to say, I’m sure there are many of us who are looking for a clean slate this year. Even if you had an incredibly year, there’s always something exciting about beginning a new year. For me, I have a ton of motivation and energy to put toward my goals. One of those goals is to simply my life more in the new year, so I’m sharing eight things to simply in 2018.

1| Expectations

My biggest focus for 2018 is to simplify my expectations of myself and of others. I’ve found when you remove expectations from yourself and others, you’re less likely to be disappointed. Now, I’m not saying you should have goals and expect to achieve them, but I am saying you shouldn’t have unrealistic expectations for your goals. Be kind and real with yourself and the people around you. We’re all human. We all make mistakes. Don’t let your expectations get the best of you.

2| Resolutions

I made a long list of goals and resolutions for 2017, which I was able to achieve the majority of them. However, looking back at the last year showed me that we put a lot of stress and energy toward these resolutions. Instead, I’m simplifying my resolutions this year in hopes that it will keep me focused and determined to meet them, and grow as an individual throughout the year.

3| Closet

It’s time to declutter your closet by asking yourself these questions. Take a decluttering challenge and go beyond your closet if you’ve already purged your wardrobe in 2017. You can always find something to pass on to the donation bin or a friend who would use it more. Decluttering is a great step toward simplifying your life. From a person who has taken decluttering seriously this past year, I promise there are benefits to doing so.

4| Schedule

Why are we so enamored with the idea of busyness? Why do we feel that being on the go, and constantly busy is something to celebrate and enjoy? For 2018, I’m hoping to life a little more slowly. It’s something I’ve been incorporating in my life the last two months, and it really has its benefits. Pursing slow living is a wonderful step to take to simplify your life and to simplify your schedule in the new year.

5| Meal Prepping

Think of all the time you spend grocery shopping, making lunches and dinners, and stressing over what you’re going to eat the following day. It’s amazing how much time we spend in the kitchen altogether, which is why you should consider simplifying your meal time and preparation. Make a list and stick to it instead of wandering the aisles for an hour (you’ll also save money, too). On Sundays, cook the bulk of lunches and dinners for the week, so I’m not spending time worrying about making a sandwich, or getting a salad together last minute. It’s amazing how much time you’ll save throughout the week by simplifying this area of your life.

6| Cleaning Routine

Cleaning is another thing we spend a ton of time on. When you have less things, you have less things to clean, which means less time spent cleaning, which means more time doing the things you want to do. It’s really a beautiful thing. So simplify your cleaning routine by making setting a timer for an hour to get the big things done first like putting in a load of laundry, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning the bathrooms. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in an hour alone. Find a simple routine to follow, and you’ll have a lot more free time throughout the week!

7| Relationships

You know the friend who has changed a lot in the year, and you have found yourself drifting away from them? Or, the friend who hasn’t been lifting you up during a happy time in your life? Those people shouldn’t be in your life in the new year. Simplifying your relationships is one of the most therapeutic things you can do because not everyone who walks into your life is meant to stick around forever, especially if they’re a toxic friend. Find people who bring you nothing but happiness, and remove the friends who haven’t been there for you. You’ll find that simplifying those relationships will make room for the relationships that are most important to you.

8| Time

As the years go on, the more I find that time is too short. In 2018, I want to simplify how I spend my time. Instead of scrolling on Instagram and Pinterest for two hours wondering where the time has gone, I want to spend it doing productive things that will help me accomplish the goals I have for myself in the new year. Instead of watching Netflix for no reason, I want to work on a goal I’ve had since I was 10 years old. Simplify how you’re spending (or wasting your time) and you’ll find there’s a lot of time for accomplishing your goals for the year.

5 Ways to Practice Minimalism [That Doesn’t Involve Decluttering]

I know what you’re thinking…

You think that minimalism is ALL about decluttering. Decluttering your closets, decluttering your kitchen, decluttering your basement. It’s all about getting rid of things you don’t use. I’m here to drop a major truth bomb.

Minimalism isn’t ONLY about decluttering.

Sure, is it a huge focus that you see all over Pinterest and YouTube? Yes, it definitely is. But I want people to understand that there are so many other ways to practice this lifestyle that doesn’t involve you going through your entire house and purging every other day. Although I definitely believe decluttering is extremely helpful in this process, it isn’t the only component of living more minimally. So, I’m here to share five other ways you can practice living a minimalist lifestyle, that has nothing to do with decluttering.

1| Focus on your buying habits.

You can declutter all you want, but if you’re going right back to the store—then you’re not doing yourself any good. The purpose of minimalism is that you’re removing the non-essential to make more room for what is essential. It’s about only having what you need rather than a new trend you may want temporarily. This could be a long post by itself, but you can also focus on shopping consciously at second-hand shops and thrifting for items to help with budgeting and ethical shopping. P.S. 2| Go green + DIY.

Another area where you can simplify and minimize your life is with cleaning and beauty products. I’ve been focusing on streamlining my beauty routine and researching more on DIY scrubs, and natural products for my skin like coconut oil and homemade coffee scrubs. You can also clean a lot of of your home using vinegar and essential oils. There are tons of bloggers out there who are helpful should you decide to learn more about natural, green products for cleaning and beauty.

3| Rethink your food.

I have to give my brother and sister a shoutout here because I admire how they garden. They grow their own vegetables, fruit and herbs—and you can tell they enjoy the process and work behind it. Minimalism deals with consumption, which includes the food you eat. I’ve been trying hard to stay away from processed foods and enjoy a mix of fruits, vegetables, and protein. When we move into our home, I hope to do a little more with planting herbs and gardening in hopes that it will help me choose more plants and healthy, whole foods rather than snacks and junk food.

4| Practice what you preach. 

If you’re practicing minimalism, how do you show others? When the holidays roll around, are you giving nieces and nephews more clothes they don’t need, and toys they may only use for a short time? If yes, you’re not being faithful in your practices. Although not everyone practices this lifestyle, it’s important to remember that practicing what you preach is essential. If people see you giving unnecessary things, people will give YOU unnecessary things YOU don’t need or want. You’re only hurting yourself in the long run. Instead, give your niece and nephew day passes to the local zoo, aquarium, museum, or park they love. Give your sibling a date night with their spouse to a trampoline park or a new brewery. Give experiences or things they need or are useful.

5|  How are your goals?

Let’s say you’ve been working on this how minimalism business for awhile now, and you’ve purged your entire house from top to bottom. You went from spending an hour every day cleaning to two hours a week cleaning. You now have TONS of time on your hands because you aren’t cleaning and cooking for hours every single day. So what are you spending your time on? If you’re filling up your time with Netflix and social media—stop immediately. Get our your vision board and see what you want to accomplish. Now, make more time to actually work on those goals. Minimalism is about making time and space for the goals and life you want to live. Now, go do it.

You all know I love a good decluttering session, but there are other aspects of minimalism that will bring bliss to your life. Once you’re done decluttering, look to some of the other examples above like growing your own food, focusing on your goals and dreams, and overhauling your shopping habits.

Why Minimalism is Refreshing

Have you ever thought about how many things you own? Think about it. Let’s not even go  talk about every room in the your home. Let’s just talk about YOUR stuff: clothes, shoes, jewelry, bags, accessories, coats, etc.

You probably have a lot. Way more than you think. Probably even more than you could ever use.

So why do you have so much stuff? Why do we feel this intense need to have more stuff even though we already have so much stuff? We have a closet full of clothes we only wear 40 percent of, a rack of shoes we wear 25 percent of, and a cabinet of jewelry we wear 10 percent of. We don’t even use what we have yet we continue to buy more. Doesn’t that seem a little strange to you?

It seemed crazy to me, too. I was a person who owned SO. MUCH. STUFF. I owned so much jewelry that was never worn and I had a closet PACKED with clothes that I hated and didn’t love or find useful. I wore the same things yet I constantly wanted to get more, buy new, and everything in between.

Back when I began this journey of minimalism, I thought it would only go as far as decluttering my closet. I didn’t think anything life-changing would come from wanting to get rid of old clothes.

Except, it did.

Minimalism was the most refreshing concept to me because it allowed me to be okay with having things I only loved and got use of. It didn’t force me to go shopping every season for an entirely new wardrobe. It didn’t make me feel like I needed to spend half my paycheck on things and stuff when I was completely happy with what I already had. Minimalism is refreshing and it’s something I haven’t been able to really explain until now.

The other day, I decided to go through my entire closet and dresser and count how many clothing items I had. I counted shirts, dresses, seasonal wear, shoes, jackets, and everything in between. The only thing I left out were socks, bras, etc. I was shocked at how high this number was despite the fact that it was EVERYTHING I owned.

230. From tops to bottoms to bathing suits to dresses to sleepwear to workout clothes to formal wear. I owned 230 pieces of clothing.

And I’m sure you’re saying, “Wow, she’s DEFINITELY not a minimalist.” To be fair, I do call myself an unconventional minimalist for a reason! 😉 Also, I don’t think you need to ONLY own 30 pieces in your closet to identify with this lifestyle. I also don’t think we can really judge someone’s interpretation of this lifestyle solely based on how many items are in their closet.

To be honest, I wasn’t happy with that number at first. Until I remembered how much I had before this journey began. I used to own more than 19 pairs of jeans, 37 cardigans, 10 pairs of shorts, and 40 dresses. Now, I own 4 pairs of jeans, 8 cardigans, 2 pairs of shorts, 16 dresses. 

I don’t know about you, but the difference in those numbers are pretty substantial. That alone is 76 things less than what I had before, and that’s only a small part of my closet. I also forget that I work in an industry where I need quite a bit of professional clothing for meetings, events, networking, etc. I also workout often, so yoga pants and workout tops are essential.

Minimalism is refreshing because it’s refreshing to see how much you truly don’t need to live a blissful life. I’m still constantly getting rid of things in my closet (I filled a bag the other day with about 15 things) because I know 230 is still a large number. However, there’s no doubt in my mind that I had more than 600 clothing items at one point in my life. Looking back, if you counted jewelry, shoes, clothes, accessories, I would have been close to the 800 mark or more. But I got rid of a lot, I sold a lot, and I only kept what I loved. Have I purchased some new things? Definitely. But, I’ve learned that it’s better to invest in staples that will last for years rather than items you’ll only wear for a few seasons.

Minimalism is refreshing because it helps you practice contentment rather than spend money and shop unnecessarily. It’s refreshing to know that debt won’t be in my future when I’m happy with what I have and I only shop and buy when I know I truly need something or love something.

Even if you’re not set on the idea of minimalism altogether maybe you’ll consider going through your closet to see how much you have. Maybe it’s 800, maybe it’s 50. But, I’m sure the number will surprise you either way.
