Mental Cleanse Challenge: Week 5

It’s crazy to think that this month has flown by so quickly. It seems like yesterday that Erin reached out to me to see if i was interested in collaborating with her on this challenge. After going through this month with focusing on self care, relaxation and more—I’ve learned so much from this process and experience. I want to thank Erin from A Welder’s Wife for joining me with these challenges and experience altogether. It has been wonderful to work with her and see how she has done each week during the challenges!

Now keep reading below to see how I did last week on the positivity challenges:

Feb. 20: No complaint day.

I was a little nervous about this challenge because if I’m stressing out over a workout…I will complain. But, I’m happy to say that I made it through Insanity without a single complaint! A huge win for me personally, haha!

Feb 21: Write down 3 great things that happened today.

1. I had a productive day at work. 2. I worked hard on the blog after work. 3. I meal prepped for the entire week.

Feb 22: Spend 15 minutes in silence focusing on one positive attribute about yourself.

My positive attribute was focusing on my self-motivation and drive to keep going. The part I struggled with was only focusing on this one thought when there were other thoughts in my head.

Feb 23: Compliment a stranger.

This is never a difficult task since I’m around people most of the time. It is always nice to see someone light up after you give them a genuine compliment.

Feb 24: Write a letter to yourself explaining why you are unique.

I thought I was going to have a difficult time with this one, but instead of writing a letter, I decided to do it as a list, which seemed less daunting and overwhelming for someone who feels uncomfortable talking about themselves.

Feb 25: Ask your friends to describe you in 3 words, write them down, and repeat it to yourself throughout the day.

I decided to ask my co-workers it was the best decision of my life. They said: confident, outgoing and crazy (in a good way, haha). It makes me happy to see how they perceive me is in a positive way. It definitely made my day to think about this throughout the rest of the day.

Feb 26: Write out your challenge wins and treat yourself!

I’m so happy to say that I was able to complete all the challenges throughout this month. This challenge and teaming with up Erin taught me so much about practicing self care and focusing on time for myself, which was so important. I was most surprised about the diet and exercise challenges like going vegan and trying a new workout!


Overall, I’m sad to see that that challenge is over with, but I love knowing it’s something I can plan for another month down the road when I’m in need of some self care and relaxation. If you followed along with these challenges:

What was your favorite/least favorite week?

My favorite week was the self care week because it had mix of everything from walking to pampering sessions and everything in between. My least favorite week was probably the diet and exercise because it was a little more challenging even though it was worth it!

What challenges were you most surprised that you were able to accomplish?

No complaint day during the positivity week and trying a new workout during the diet and exercise week. Both were two that I was worried about, but was happy and proud for accomplishing them.

What challenges were your favorite or most difficult to complete?

I loved all the positivity challenges even though they were also the most difficult challenges to complete for me personally. When I was able to cross the daily challenge off my list for each day, it was so satisfying.

Is this something you’d like to try again down the road?

YES! I definitely want to plan this for summertime when I’ll need another pick-me-up-month and need to focus on self care, relaxation and refreshing my mind altogether.

My Minimalism Journey [So Far]

2016 was a huge year for me in terms of discovering what material items I felt were no longer important or essential for me. I have grown so much from this journey so far, especially because I moved out of my parent’s home and into my own home. I didn’t want to have a cluttered or disorganized home; I wanted my home to be a space that was calming, relaxing, and simple.

Why I chose Minimalism:

1| I felt less anxious

For those who don’t know, I have struggled with anxiety and OCD for several years. When I removed unnecessary clutter and items from my life, I felt my anxiety decrease significantly. The fewer items I owned, the less I had to clean, wash, sort and organize. Needless to say, it has helped me SO much!

2| It brought me joy

I went into this minimalism journey with one concept it mind: if the item didn’t bring me happiness, there was no need to keep it in my life. More than 90 percent of the things I got rid of were simply because they were things I didn’t love. This is the best mindset to have when beginning your journey.

3| It gave me perspective

It can be difficult to focus on the bigger things in life, but minimalism helped me to understand there is more to life than owning an article of clothing in every color. Or, making sure you’re saving a handbag or belt for an occasion that may never come up again. There’s more to life than things. Life should be about adventure and experiences.


With these concepts in mind, I knew minimalism was something that would help me achieve the lifestyle and space I craved. So, I began with my own items in my room. I sat in a mountain of clothes taller than my nightstand, and felt the negative impact of having stuff I didn’t love. But I also knew that getting rid of things was going to be difficult, so I promised myself to take the process slow. There was no need to rush.

Over the course of a month, I removed more than 60 percent of my clothes, jewelry, accessories and shoes. I felt incredibly relieved—but I was itching to keep getting rid of things. Here is how I was able to declutter my closet.

There becomes a point in your minimalism journey where you become addicted to the process. Every week, I would find myself going through my closet to find another item (or 10) to donate, sell or toss.  By summer, I truly felt blissful with where I was in my minimalism journey.

Throughout summer and fall, I craved a desire for adopting minimalism and simplicity even further in my life. I began to simplify my routine and practice mindfulness more and more. I began practicing conscious shopping and truly monitored my shopping habits to become more aware of what was necessary and unnecessary. I also focused on my daily routine and leading a minimalist lifestyle.

Now, I am almost a year into my minimalism journey, and although I am still learning throughout the process, I am very satisfied with where I am with my journey right now. I think it’s important to appreciate every step in the journey. I know 2017 will be another year filled with progressing on my minimalism journey, and I hope to document more of this journey along the way!

10 Tasks to Simplify Your Life

1| Manage your email

There was a dark time in my life where my email inbox was somewhere in the 1,000s, and I knew I had to take care of it as soon as possible. I took 30 minutes to mass delete and unsubscribe from emails to remove the clutter to my inboxes. I know it doesn’t seem like a big task, but it will make a huge difference when you’re not receiving unwanted emails every day.

2| Delete old contacts from your phone

I’m going to be completely honest when I say I had cellphone numbers from people from middle school. The worst part is that I haven’t talked to them since then. I don’t know how my phone became a mass holder for people who I haven’t talked to in almost 10 years. Needless to say, it was time to clear out my phone of all the unnecessary contacts.

3| Plan your meals for the week

No, I don’t do this every single week because I’m human and sometimes I eat 90-minute rice for dinner. It happens. But I will tell you that I have gotten so much better with planning my lunches and dinners for the week. When I do have time to do this, my week is so much better because I can plan ahead and spend less time thinking about what to make, buying ingredients during the week, etc.

4| Write your to-do list before bed

My work to-do list is done the day before before 5 p.m. My personal to-do list is done before I go to bed Sometimes, I think of last-minute work things, or other small tasks and errands I need to do after work. This helps me sleep easily at night, and I wake up knowing what my day will look like. There’s nothing keep me up at night wondering if I forgot about something, so I’m ready to take on a new day.

5| Keep a donate bag in your home

I started doing this before I moved out because I found that there were so many days where I would get in a “mood” to clean and get rid of things. That way, you have a bag/box already started, so you’ll feel more inclined to keep adding to it throughout the season. In the last five months, I’ve easily donated 10 garbage bags of clothes, books, bags, jewelry, shoes, etc. I find that this always keeps me thinking about removing unnecessary items I don’t love, and it helps me to stay productive with decluttering.

6| Make a routine and stick to it

My routine is simple and straightforward. But there’s nothing worse that taking more than an hour to get ready in the morning because you don’t know how to manage and prioritize your time throughout the day. See where you can cut time from your routine to make your day flow better. It will allow you to have a better, productive day, and you will simplify your daily routine in the process.

7| Rethink how you organize

If your organization is all over the place, you might want to reconsider your methods for organizing your finances, medical information, insurance, etc. Whether you choose a filing cabinet, file folders, or a portable organizer—choose one method, and keep everything in one space for important documents. When you have a mishap of papers everywhere, that’s when things get lost, and you get stressed.

8| Shop intentionally

This can mean anything from clothes shopping, beauty shopping or home shopping. Regardless, ask yourself if it’s something you know you will use. If yes, how often will you use it? Is it worth purchasing; or are you just buying it because it’s on sale or it’s trending on Pinterest? Why do you want to buy it? Ask yourself these questions to learn more about your shopping habits and what prompt you to shop. This will help you down the road to only buy what you need.

9| Make time for yourself

I know you’re asking, “how does this relate to the other suggestions?” Doing the things you truly enjoy is essential for simplifying your life because you don’t wan tot spend your days doing things that don’t bring you joy. My tip: make a list of things you love, and a list of things you actually do every day. If you don’t have any items on there from the “things you love” list, you need to adjust your life by removing the unnecessary things that don’t bring your joy.

10| Eliminate instead of organize

The world of Pinterest does not help my cause on this one. There are so many tutorials and inspiration for organizing just about every area of your home. But if you have so much to organize, you might need to rethink how much stuff you have or need. Instead, take time to go through each room and see what you truly need and what you don’t need. Then, you can organize what you decide to keep.
