My Previous Success With Vision Boards: How to Create a Vision Board that Will Actually Help You Achieve Your Goals

Posted in Lifestyle
on July 10, 2017

IT’S. FINALLY. HERE.

This series is something I’ve been dreaming up for awhile now, and I’ll talk more about why I put off this series for a few months. But I’m excited to share my three-post series on making a Vision Board that will ACTUALLY help you achieve your goals. If you want to make all your #GirlBoss Goals come to life, you’re definitely going to want to stop back all-month long for a ton of bliss. Cause let me tell you, when you achieve your goals, bliss is the only word that comes to mind.

There will be three different posts in this series on Mondays on the blog. Today’s post will be about the back story of:

1| How I first created my own vision board before I even knew what it was.

2| My previous success using Vision Boards.

3| Why I’ve been using them ever since.

In next week’s post, you’ll see more on physically creating the board itself that will set you and your goals up for success and some topics you can add to your board. And in the last post, I’ll show my own vision board that I have for myself for the next three years.

So let’s get into all this vision board talk so YOU can achieve YOUR goals!

Okay, but for real, what even is a vision board?

The simple answer: a vision board is a board you create that outlines your goals. You can create it on poster board, bulletin board, etc. or you can make a digital version and save them on your computer if you also want it handy when you’re at work. There are so many ways to create a vision board, but the goal is to have a place where all your goals and motivations are highlighted.

Fun Fact: I created a vision board before I knew what it was.

No, seriously…that happened. I’m a quotes/motivational messages girl. I always had inspiration sayings on my bulletin board and lists of my goals so that I always had some motivation to keep working hard. Spring semester freshmen year was a whirlwind for me, but I knew I had some goals that were intertwined with my quotes. Take note of these few goals:

1| Graduate in 3 years with distinction

2| Get my Master’s in Integrated Marketing Communications

3| Minor in Spanish

4| Study Abroad in Italy

5| Focus on Internships

After my sophomore year of college, I was packing up my room and taking down some my bulletin board. It had photos of Italy, quotes in Spanish, pictures of magazines, quotes to motivate me to continue my education, etc.

It was in that moment I realized my GOALS and DREAMS became a reality. I received my acceptance letter to begin my Master’s in the fall (my third year of school). Which leads me to my next point: I committed to graduating in three years by my sophomore year because I was about to spend the summer in ITALY in order to graduate early with my B.A. and minor in Spanish. Oh wait, and I secured two AMAZING INTERNSHIP opportunities for the summer that I was excited for.

Are you picking up what I’m putting down?

I connected the dots rather quickly, and realized this bulletin board had magical powers.

Just kidding. The board didn’t have magical powers. But I went out searching the Internet for “Goal Bulletins” and “Goal Planners” and such because I was feeling amazing about meeting these goals after a year. That’s when I stumbled across Vision Boards. I remember sitting in my room shrieking, “OHMYGOD THAT’S IT! THAT’S WHAT I MADE!”

And I’ve never looked back.

So now you’re like, okay Kiara you made one vision board and now you expect us to believe making one will work for us?

Yes, girl. I do. Because listen up: I made another vision board shortly after with a new set of goals over the span of a few months:

1| Graduating Summa Cum Laude with my Master’s.

2| Start a full-time marketing job I love.

3| Find my first home and move in with Josh

4| Focus on health and and fitness

And I accomplished those goals, too. And, no. I didn’t play it safe with my goals either. I laid down another tall order that seemed rather impossible, but that’s the problem—it always seems impossible until it’s done.

That’s why I am writing this series. That’s why I want you to read this series—so you realize YOUR dreams and YOUR goals ARE POSSIBLE.

So, you have two choices. You can continue to sleep with your dreams. Or you can wake up and chase them. (After you read the next two posts in my series on how to create a vision board that will actually help you achieve your goals.)

Next week, I’ll be sharing how to create a vision board that will actually help you achieve your goals. And the following week I’ll be sharing my current, updated vision board for the next three years.

So tell me, have you created a vision board? Has it worked for you in the past? Would you be open to creating a new one using the tips from this series? Tell me all about it in the comments below!

2017 Goals: 6-Month Update

Posted in Health, Lifestyle
on June 21, 2017

We’re halfway through the year, and I don’t even know what to say. Is this what being old feels like? Feeling continuously shocked by how quickly the year is going?

For 2017, I decided that I was going to take my goals a little more seriously. To keep myself more accountable of these goals I set for myself, I decided to do check-in periods every quarter where I would review my progress with my goals for the year. I knew that when I set these goals, I wanted to take them seriously, so writing these posts are helpful because I am reminded of what I want to achieve this year. You can read my 3-month update on my 2017 goals.

Personal Goals:

1| Read 8-10 books throughout 2017

I’m up to seven books this year and I couldn’t be happier that I’ve been focusing on this goal for 2017. In my 3-month update, I said I was thinking about hitting this goal by summer, which is today, so I don’t think that is going to happen.

2| Plan 2-3 trips for 2017

So far, we went to Boston. Instead of focusing only on “big” travel plans, I want this to be more about traveling and experiencing new places I’ve never been before even if they’re weekend trips. I’m also considering a trip to visit my friend in San Francisco this winter. I’ll be sure to keep you guys up-to-date on my travel plans!

3| Achieve my career goals for 2017

I can officially cross this one off my list because I have been working so hard for the last six months at work to achieve all my goals for the year and I’m happy to say this is one I don’t have to keep stressing about for the second half of the year. Now it’s time to focus on my other goals.

4| Focus on my vision board

I said in my 3-month update that I want to write a series of posts on how to make a vision board, what I’ve learned from using this method to achieve my goals, etc. If you’re interested in seeing a post on this, leave a comment below! I am planning this for my July/August content calendar but it went on hold for spring because a lot of my time and energy was focused on work.

Blogging Goals:

1| Focus on my blog direction

This can officially be crossed off my list because after six months of content being put out, I feel that my blog direction and theme has truly changed for the better. I feel better writing the content I’ve been putting on the blog since I decided to write more about self care, lifestyle, minimalism and overall wellness and living a life of bliss.

2| Increase blog social media engagement by 20 percent

Although I can say that my engagement has definitely increased a ton of Twitter and Instagram, I can’t say the same for Facebook. But it’s all a work in progress, right?

3| Take more risks

Well, I took one amazing risk thanks to my lovely friend Erin! We did a collab on a monthly challenge where we gave challenges to help you relax and refresh your mind for February. The challenges focused on mental clarity and self-care, which are two topics I’m passionate about. I’m hoping to collab with bloggers more throughout the year and take more blogging risks overall. Stay tuned to read more on this!

Financial Goals:

1| Put an extra $8-10,000 into savings

I’m still on track to achieve this goal a several months earlier than anticipated, which makes me incredibly happy. I know saving in your 20s is so important, and it’s something I want to keep focusing on for the remainder of 2017. If you want to read posts on how I save money, let me know in the comments!

2| Track my spending regularly

It’s a lot of work to continuously update your spendings. I’m not someone who wants to track everything I spend because I realize it causes more stress than happiness. I’m more than comfortable with what I’m spending and saving since I don’t spend much to begin with. You feel? I’m realizing this isn’t the “goal” I originally set out to do in 2017, so I’m updating it to reflect my lifestyle. Instead, I want to make sure I’m spending the majority of my money on necessities: food, bills; and a small portion of my money each month is spending money for a pedicure, haircut or treating myself to happy hour.

Health Goals:

1| Increase my weekly running distance

I’ve realized this is something we’re still not focusing on because we have been focusing more of our workouts to high intensity interval training where we will run hard for one minute and then walk for two minutes. We repeat this cycle 8-10 times before finishing off with a cool down of walking for 15 minutes and stretching. Once we get more into running for distance, I’ll be sure to update you on this goal.

2| Don’t focus on numbers

I truly stopped caring about numbers I have found that it has done wonders for my self-esteem and happiness altogether. I said it once, and I’ll say it again: NUMBERS. DO. NOT. MATTER. Once you stop focusing on the numbers and more on how you feel, you will see a huge difference in how you feel about working out and your body image altogether.

3| Focus on workouts I enjoy

I’e been loving my Tuesday and Thursday workouts, which have been a combination of different abdominal, leg and arm strength-training exercises that I do in sets of 2 or 3. It usually takes about 45 minutes of working out and I’ll finish with stretching for 15 minutes. It’s wonderful to spend time working out when you love the workouts you’re doing.

How have you been doing on your goals for 2017? Check your list you made a few months ago and start working on how you can work on them for the next few months! Make sure to leave a comment below saying what goals you have been working on/already have achieved this year!

2017 Goals: 3-Month Update

Posted in Lifestyle
on March 27, 2017

2017 needs to slow down because I don’t understand how three months have already come and gone so quickly.

When I listed out my goals for 2017, I knew that I wanted to have check-in points where I would check my progress throughout the year so I wouldn’t forget about my goals. It also allows me to make smaller, achievable goals so that I can work toward the larger goals I have set out for the year. Today is my first check-in for 2017, and I’m interested to look back and see the progress I’ve made over the last few months.

Make sure to share your goals for 2017 in the comments and let me know how you have been doing over the last three months!

Personal Goals:

1| Read 8-10 books throughout 2017

So far I read five books this year and I couldn’t be happier that I’ve been focusing on this goal for 2017. I’m hoping to make it to my goal by summer!

2| Plan 2-3 trips for 2017

We have our trip to Boston in April, but I’m thinking of a smaller trip with Josh even if it’s to Pittsburgh. I’m also considering planning a trip to visit my friend in San Francisco this fall. I’ll be sure to keep you guys up-to-date on my travel plans!

3| Achieve my career goals for 2017

This would be a little too long if I went in-depth with this section, but I have more than halfway through my career goals for 2017. This one has surprised me the most even under unique circumstances at work! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of 2017 in terms of my job.

4| Focus on my vision board

All the ideas are in place, but I’ve been waiting to physically make the board because I have been considering writing series of posts on how to make a vision board, what I’ve learned from using this method to achieve my goals, etc. If you’re interested in seeing a post on this, leave a comment below!

Blogging Goals:

1| Focus on my blog direction

If you caught up on my post back in January, you will know about how my blogging direction changed a little. Since then, I’ve incorporated more posts on minimalism, simple living and everything in between and I have loved every minute.

2| Increase blog social media engagement by 20 percent

We all know it’s not about numbers, but engagement. Not only do I want to focus on other’s engaging with me, but also focus on increasing my engagement with others, too. Let’s be real—this is a two-way street. So far, I haven’t done the best with this, but I want to make it my focus for the next few months.

So far I’m on track to achieve this goal a few months earlier than anticipated, which makes me incredibly happy. I know saving in your 20s is so important, and it’s something I want to focus on. If you want to read posts on how I save money, let me know in the comments!

2| Track my spending regularly

I had every intention of keeping up with this, but since Josh set up a spending tracker sheet, I have been horrible with updating it. I’m hoping to simplify this task, and make this work more for me so I can track my spending each month.

Health Goals:

1| Increase my weekly running distance

We’re not in running season yet, but by next month I think we will be out running through October.

2| Don’t focus on numbers

I truly stopped caring about numbers I have found that it has done wonders for my self-esteem and happiness altogether. TBH y’all, NUMBERS DO NOT MATTER. Once you stop focusing on the numbers and more on how you feel, you will see a huge difference!

3| Focus on workouts I enjoy

So far this has been going well. I’ve focused on workout that are specific to Pilates, abs circuit training, etc. It’s wonderful to love the workouts you do and not to hate every minute of my workouts!

How have you been doing on your goals for 2017? Maybe check your list you made a few months ago and start working on how you can work on them for the nest few months! Make sure to leave a comment below saying what goals you have been working on/already have achieved this year!

5 Things to be Happy About: March 2017

Posted in Health, Lifestyle
on March 6, 2017

Who else is so excited for the new month?!

Can we have a moment, y’all? I’m in denial about how quickly this year has passed by so far. 2017 has been beautiful so far, so part of me wants it to slow down a little. But I will say I’m ready for a new month and a new list of goals to accomplish.

Catch up on February’s edition of “5 Things to Be Happy About!”

Now we can move onto a little gratitude and happiness for March. Make sure to leave a comment below letting me know what you’re excited about for the month. Let’s share a little gratitude and happiness in the blogging community!

1| First Day of Spring

Last month I talked about how I was excited to skip through February so we can get into spring. You have no idea how excited I am to know that spring is around the corner. Spring is a sure sign that warmer weather and lighter days are ahead. It also means I get to finally change up my wardrobe after wearing winter coats and boots for months on end.

2| Lighter Days

You all know that Christmas is my favorite time of year. But once the holidays are over, I’m ready to jump in spring head on and get a little more sunshine and warmer weather in my life. Living in Pennsylvania can be difficult because it can snow until May. I’m definitely looking forward to more sun as the days grow a little longer.

3| Flowers

I’m all about fresh flowers and brining the beauty of nature indoors. March is when I can go crazy with buying new plants for my office, my home and treat myself to more flowers. Because life is too short to have a home without flowers, amiright? So make sure to #treatyoself to some fresh blooms this month because you deserve it (and it will bring a smile to your face every morning).

4| Spring Cleaning

Raise your hand if spring cleaning and decluttering makes you so happy you can’t stand it! (Oh, just me? Okay.) Anyway, I’m ready to go through my spring and summer clothes and declutter more as a new season begins. I’m also ready for a deep clean in our home to freshen everything in a new season. Do you have any spring cleaning checklists that you love? Make sure to send some my way!

5| Wardrobe Change

I’m all about making my needs few and focusing on my more minimalist lifestyle, but with spring comes a change in my wardrobe. I can start putting away bulky sweaters in exchange for light fabrics in pastel colors. My wardrobe and style will get a mini makeover this month as I edit my clothes and bring in new, staple pieces I’ve been looking for. Leave a comment below telling me what your spring wardrobe essentials are. I would love to know!

What are you looking forward to now that it’s March!? Do you have any exciting blog plans for the month? Make sure to share in the comments below!

2016 Review & 2017 Goals

Posted in Health, Lifestyle
on January 2, 2017

I am very much in denial that 2016 is over and a new year is here. 2016 was an incredible year for me, and I am happy to say it was one of my best years so far. I want to share some highlights from this year before sharing what my 2017 goals are.

Highlights from 2016:

1| Graduating with my Master’s Degree at 21: I am extremely proud of myself for this because there were a lot of people who doubted this could be done when I first began school. Four years later, I graduated with my M.A. in Integrated Marketing Communications, my B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication and a minor in Spanish. This was a huge accomplishment for me, and was definitely my best moment of 2016.

2| Being more spontaneous: This was a huge goal of mine throughout 2016 because as you can imagine, I thrive off of planning every little detail. I wanted to remind myself that it’s okay to not always have a plan. Sometimes, the best memories are created when you don’t plan much at all. So, I took some trips: one to Albany in March to visit one of my best friends from college, and another trip in May to visit my other best friend from college in Texas. Both trips were amazing and got my travel bug in full swing, which caused me to book a trip to Boston for April 2017!

3| Getting my first job: Can we just say that 2016 was the year that I became a full-blown adult? I got my first full-time job in the marketing field, and I am in love with my job. There’s nothing more wonderful than knowing I get to wake up every day and go to a job I truly love. I know many people are stuck in a job they hate, and I am blessed to be in a position I love.

4| Moving out of state and buying my first place with Josh: I didn’t move too far away from home; but I did move from NY to PA back in April when I got my job. After over two years of being long distance, Josh and I got our first place together, and we couldn’t be happier! We love our home, and we love that we were able to make our relationship a priority and bring our lives together.

5| Putting my health first: 2016 was the year that I got back on track as far as my overall health. From all the stress of finishing my Master’s brought on poor eating, lack of exercise, and other unhealthy habits. Once I moved to PA, Josh and I got in the habit of running three miles two or three times a week, eating healthy, and taking more time for self care. I feel great, and hope to keep this up for 2017, too!

Goals for 2017:

Personal Goals:

1| Read (8-10 books throughout 2017)

I did not do well in the reading category for 2016, so I’m hoping to turn this around for 2017. I created a huge wish list of books for Christmas, so I’m hoping I’ll be gifted some content to achieve this goal!

2| Plan 2-3 trips for 2017

We do have our trip to Boston scheduled, so I’m definitely looking forward to that. I’m hoping to plan another trip to Pittsburgh and potentially a third trip in 2017 as well. You could say I definitely have the travel bug.

3| Achieve my career goals for 2017

In my mind, I have so many different career-oriented goals for 2017 that I want to accomplish. Although I know work-related goals should be its own category, I’m listed it under personal because there are too many topics to cover for this section!

4| Focus on my vision board

I’ve been working on my vision board A TON recently. If you’d like to see a blog post on my vision board and how I created mine, make sure to leave a comment below!

Blogging Goals:

1| Focus on my blog direction

I’ve been thinking a lot about the direction I want Blissfully Brunette to go in. And while you can expect an entire post on it, I want to at least let you know there might be some changes coming to the blog for 2017.

2| Increase blog social media engagement by 20 percent

I know so many people who focus on specific stats and numbers. For me, it’s not just about numbers. I care a lot about engagement, interaction and genuine connections via social media.

3| Take more risks

Sometimes, anxiety can hold me back, but I don’t want it to hold my blog back from its full potential. 2017 will be the year that I take more risks and try new things here on the blog.

Financial Goals:

1| Put an extra $8-10,000 into savings

This is a huge goal of mine. I’ve created an in-depth plan on how I plan to achieve it. Let’s just say it’s going to take a ton of spending freezes (I’m starting one for the first quarter) I’ll be sure to keep you up-to-date on this goal, too!

2| Track my spending regularly

I mentioned that Josh keeps a very specific excel sheet on what he spends every. single. day. I admire his commitment because I see that he’s able to achieve his savings goals, so I’m hoping to adopt this and do the same!

Health Goals:

1| Increase my weekly running distance

We aren’t currently in running season, but we are still training all winter long for when running season does pick up again. My goal is to increase my weekly running distance to 10 miles.

2| Don’t focus on numbers

I don’t want my weight or size in general to affect my overall happiness and perception of my heath and fitness endeavors. I feel like numbers takes a negative toll on your mental health, so I don’t want this to take priority for me.

3| Focus on workouts I enjoy

I spent a lot of time when I was younger doing workouts that I didn’t enjoy. Let me tell you that you shouldn’t spend time doing A N Y T H I N G  you don’t enjoy. Find something you love and enjoy, and practice it daily!

I hope you enjoyed reading my goals for 2017. How did you do on your goals for 2016? What are some of your goals for 2017? Make sure to leave a comment below!
