Merry Christmas, friends! I hope you’re all spending time with loved ones, eating delicious food, and enjoying the season. Today, I thought it would be fun to talk about some of my favorite Christmas memories.
What the Holidays were like growing up:
On Christmas Eve, all of my family would go to my aunt and uncle’s house for dinner and some gifts. After, my grandma and grandpa would spend the night, and we would all wake up early on Christmas at 5 a.m. to begin opening gifts, which takes at least three hours or more. Then, we’d prepare for all of our family to come to our house for dinner that day. “A Christmas Story” would be playing on TV all day long, and that’s a tradition that remains true today.
Seeing Trans-Siberian Orchestra and other musicals:
Last Christmas was the first time I saw TSO and I fell in love. For those who don’t know, I love musicals, plays and shows. They’re a great way to get into a feel-good mood whether it’s the holiday season or not. It’s definitely a show I’d recommend for those looking for a unique date idea, or a Christmas gift for your boyfriend!
My Favorite Gift/Least Favorite Gift:
When I was eight years old, I received a keyboard. In 2002, Avril Lavigne’s number one hit “Complicated” was on the list of songs you could learn to play. Yes, I still have it because it was the best gift I could ever get. I always loved music as a child, so it meant to much to me.
However, I did have one gift that gave me nightmares for the next five or more years. When I six, I remember asking my parents to get my an “Amazing Ally” doll. When I got it, it freaked me out. My brothers would tell me it’s haunted like Chuckie. Since then, I was off Amazing Ally and it needed to go.
One of my Most Memorable Gifts:
Last Christmas, my boyfriend bought me a Michael Kors bag. To some, this may not seem like a big deal, but I had never owned a designer bag before. To sum it up, there’s a video of my sobbing and refusing to unwrap it because it was so pretty. I remember repeating “I don’t deserve this bag” at least 10 times.
Favorite Christmas Foods:
During the holidays, we always have some staples foods on this one day each year: Honey-Glazed Ham, Christmas Potatoes, Green Bean Casserole and Italian Cookies. What I love about the holidays is that you can enjoy these special foods with loved ones.
During the first week of January, my papi’s side of the family gets together at an Italian restaurant in the city for an evening of food, fun and catching up with family. We typically see this side of my a few times throughout the year, so it’s nice to have everyone come together for a belated Christmas celebration.
Living in WNY, it’s normal to spend every day outside even in Winter. I remember sledding, building forts and snowmen with my brother and his friends, and having snowball fights. Let’s not forget the simple days before technology whisked away childhoods. I cherished these memories because it reminds me of a simpler life we all used to live. Now, we are buried in technology, which has become common. Cheers to the old days!
