Reviewing My Birchbox Experience

For those who don’t know, I’ve received a six-month subscription to Birchbox back in December, and I knew that I wanted to give a full-fledged review of my experience with Birchbox after the six months.

I’m going to be completely honest when I say that although I love that I’ve been introduced to some amazing brands I might not have known otherwise, I felt that Birchbox didn’t meet the expectations I had prior to my experience.

Over the course of six months, I received a total of 35 products. Out of those products, I would purchase fewer than 10 of them consistently. I love that I found some great products I love, I don’t think it’s worth spending $10 a month for six months only to find out you found a handful you would purchase.I’m going to rate my boxes on a scale of one to five based on how many products I purchased myself afterwards or plan to purchase. I won’t include my January/Preliminary Birchbox simply because those weren’t used based on my beauty profile I created after receiving the gift.

BB3216-2February Birchbox Rating: 3 of 5 stars

BB32116-2March Birchbox Review: 2 of 5 stars

BB42016-2April Birchbox Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

BB53016-1May Birchbox Review: 4 out of 5 stars

Although my Birchbox rating increased significantly as the months continued on, it took a long time for Birchbox to understand and adjust each month’s theme to what products I would enjoy and prefer. I think that’s important to consider if you’re considering subscribing to Birchbox. You want to receive products you know you’re going to love, so if you’re waiting three or four months before you love your box, it can be frustrating.

Is Birchbox worth $10 a month?

I’m going to answer this as honestly as possible—It depends. From my experience, I don’t think every box was worth $10. My April and May boxes that I loved were wonderful, and I would want to purchase most of those products, but if you end up hating your samples, then $10 doesn’t really seem worth it, right? You have to be patient and open about trying products. I will say that I thought I was going to hate some products, but ended up loving them. I also thought I was going to love some products, but didn’t end up liking them after trying them two or three times.

Does Birchbox offer any perks?

One thing I loved about Birchbox is that each month you can review each product from your box for 10 points. When you collect 100 points, you receive $10 to their shop for purchasing products. They also allow you to combine those with any offers or freebies they might offer if you purchase products. I loved this factor because I knew I would save mine up until the end of my subscription, so now I have some money to spend!

Let’s be honest, were the sample sizes worth it?

If I’m being honest, yes! I thought most of the sample-sized products lasted quite a long time, and I was very impressed with that. It was nice because I felt that I had a long enough time to test the product and incorporate it into my routine to know whether or not I should purchase the product myself. I know many people hate that they are small, sample sizes, but a little goes a long way with most of the products, so don’t worry!

Would I resubscribe to Birchbox again?

If I received another subscription as a gift, I would be happy about it. But I don’t think this is something I would go out of my way to purchase for $10 a month. I am also curious about other beauty boxes and how they compare to to Birchbox, so maybe I’ll work on a new subscription to a different beauty box in the upcoming year. For now, I can say that although I’ll miss my little beauty samples, I don’t think it’s worth the $10 a month to subscribe to consistently.

I love your honest review of this. I think I’m one of the few bloggers left who has never done a subscription box, but this confirms why : )

    • It’s easier to go out shopping sometimes and just try things for yourself! When it doubt, you can always return things to get your money back, but you can’t do that with Birchbox!

  • I’ve received subscription boxes for review before from a couple of different companies, but as you have felt, I did not care for the majority of the boxes. The hard part for me is sometimes the samples do not last long enough to see if the product really works. I’m glad you were honest in your review. I agree that I would be happy about it being a gift, but I wouldn’t make the commitment on my own.

    • I will say that if this wasn’t a gift, I don’t think I would use that money to spend on Birchbox myself. Personally, I don’t need any beauty products as it is, but I loved trying new things each month. And, I was introduced to some amazing brands that I probably wouldn’t have learned about otherwise had it not been for Birchbox.

I really appreciate your honest opinion. we’re on a tight budget and pretty frugal so I’m always interested to know if subscription boxes are worth it or not. I like that they offer a discount if you review products, that’s neat.

    • Yes! I completely understand that, which is why I felt is was so important for me to write a review. Did I enjoy some products, yes. But did I enjoy enough products over the six months to where it’s worth the $10 a month, no.

  • I love Birchbox! I hate having to decide on new beauty products, so it’s a great way for me to try new things.

    • I definitely love that aspect about Birchbox because I can be a lazy shopper sometimes, Haha! Thanks so much for your comment!
