How to: stay healthy while studying abroad

photoHello everyone and happy Friday! I hope you all are looking forward to the weekend. I know I am with all the upcoming traveling I’ll be doing.

Today I want to share a simple “how to” post for those who want to stay healthy while studying abroad. I know it can be tempting to try every flavor of gelato and type of pasta, but control is an important aspect of staying healthy.

So, here are my tips for staying healthy while exploring a new country.

1. Think Local: Go to a Meta or other small market for fresh produce or other ingredients. If you make a fruit or vegetable salad one a day it will help save you cash and calories while studying abroad.

2. Small Portions: Don’t go full Italian with your meal and order multiple dishes. Instead, have one side dish or one primi (first dish, not the same as antipasto) and eat slow. It takes your body 20 minutes to recognize it’s full, so enjoy the meal thoroughly.

3. Sightseeing:  Think about how much walking you’ll take advantage of in Europe! You’ll do quite a bit of walking no matter what, so make sure to take this into consideration while traveling. It’s a great way to get in a daily workout with over thinking or stressing.

4. Hydrate: Always carry a water bottle with you where ever you go on a day-to-day basis. You lose more water while traveling and especially while walking. Without re-hydrating your system, you could cause jet lag or other health problems.

5. Limits: Before traveling, set a limit of how much you can spend on food. You’ll be surprised with how little money you need if you budget out your euros. Take out only the amount you set aside. You’ll save a ton of money and weight gain during your trip!

I hope you all enjoyed today’s post on how to stay healthy while traveling/studying abroad. Enjoy the rest of your day and I will talk to you all Monday!
